Second-generation Ethanol Plant in Brazil Automated with Yokogawa’s CENTUM VP

GranBio Investimentos SA is a Brazilian industrial biotech company that was born out of the vision of bringing about a green revolution through the construction of second-generation ethanol plants that will produce cheap, clean-burning biofuel from readily available biomass. Following its establishment in June 2011 by Gran Investimentos S.A., a holding company in which the Gradin family are the primary investors, the company built Bioflex 1, the first commercial second-generation ethanol plant in the Southern Hemisphere. Bioflex 1 started operation in early 2014 and is able to produce 82 million liters of biofuel per annum, making it one of the largest such facilities in the world.

As the main automation contractor (MAC) for the Bioflex 1 project, Yokogawa South America was involved from the front end engineering design (FEED) stage, performing the basic design for a control system and field instrumentation solution that will reduce costs and improve production efficiency throughout the lifecycle of the plant. Yokogawa installed the CENTUM VP integrated production control system; the csTUNER control loop tuning software; the CENTUM VP Batch package to control the plant’s pretreatment, enzymatic hydrolysis, fermentation, and distillation/separation units; field instruments including FOUNDATION™ fieldbus-enabled ADMAG AXF magnetic flowmeters, DPharp EJA series pressure/differential pressure transmitters, and control valves; and the Plant Resource Manager (PRM) asset management package. Yokogawa South America was responsible for product delivery, engineering, and operator training.

Rosemount Analytical 370XA gas chromatograph - Natural Gas Custody Transfer Metering

Designed to address some of today’s toughest measurement challenges in the upstream and midstream natural gas markets, Emerson introduces the Rosemount Analytical 370XA gas chromatograph (GC) for C6+ BTU / CV applications, including custody transfer, power generation and burner fuel/air ratio control. Meant to operate unattended in even the most extreme weather conditions and withstanding ambient temperatures within -20 °C to 60°C (-4 °F to 140 °F), the smarter, compact, and more economical 370XA features advanced technology, improved diagnostics, and an intuitive local operator interface (LOI ). Built-in software assistants included in the LOI guide the user through common operation and troubleshooting tasks, greatly simplifying the installation, startup, commissioning and on-going maintenance of the 370XA.

A unique innovation of the 370XA is its Maintainable Module™ technology. It incorporates the GC’s analytical components inside of a module that can be easily maintained or replaced at the component level in the field in most cases, substantially reducing repair costs and downtime. If the module needs more serious repair, a replacement module can be installed while the damaged one is sent to the lab or back to the manufacturer for further inspection. Upon replacing the module, the GC will automatically begin to self-diagnose and self-calibrate, doing much of the startup on its own and getting back online without having pressed a button.

Push-in connection technology: from the field to the controller

Phoenix Push-in connection technology.jpgPhoenix Contact has designed hundreds of products to make your job easier, such as products equipped with our leg-spring, push-in connection technology (PT). Terminate by simply pushing a ferruled wire into the PT terminal. No tools are required. To disconnect the wire, or terminate a stranded wire, simply push a screwdriver into the orange actuator to open the spring.

Our push-in connection technology has five times the IEC requirement for pull-out (retention) force. This means all of our PT products offer a reliable, long-lasting connection, making them ideal for high-vibration applications. The orange actuator isolates the live components from the tool, so it’s always touch safe. Push-in connection technology provides you with a fast, easy, error-free connection and eliminates the need for insertion tools.

These advantages are now available in a complete range of products: from sensor/actuator wiring in the field, to modular terminal blocks and relay systems, to compact and high-performance controllers. Simplify your wiring with push-in connection technology from Phoenix Contact.

Your advantages:

  • Consistent product range, from field cabling to the controller with push-in connection technology
  • Easy and tool-free wiring, thanks to insertion forces which are reduced by up to 50 percent
  • Fast release of the conductor with any type of tool, using the integrated lever

CERN and NI Collaborate to define the future of LabVIEW Support for Linux 64-Bit

National Instruments, the provider of solutions that enable engineers and scientists to solve the world’s greatest engineering challenges, announced a collaboration with CERN, an intergovernmental research organization building the world’s largest and most advanced scientific instruments. The objective is to push the standardization of all CERN control systems to Linux 64-bit OSs, with goals to boost system performance, design cost-effective distributed control systems and enlarge opportunities for small and medium enterprises with expertise in NI and open-source technologies.

NI has been working with the European Organization for Nuclear Research, more commonly known as CERN, since the early 1990s on applications that help explain what the universe is made of and how it began. Notable collaborations include the Large Hadron Collider collimation system, where applications developed with LabVIEW system design software control stepping motors on approximately 120 NI PXI systems, and the MedAustron ion beam cancer therapy center, for which CERN received three awardsat NIWeek 2013. These common developments have resulted in valuable training for engineers in the fast-growing embedded systems market, and have led to long-term maintainable systems in mission-critical applications.

A recent collaboration between CERN and NI concentrated on CERN’s infrastructure improvement plans. Prior to the public release of LabVIEW support for 64-bit Linux, the Engineering Department (EN) Industrial Controls and Engineering (ICE) Group at CERN, acted as a lead user to help NI define and refine the software features needed to ensure CERN’s success in continuing to use NI tools. By working with CERN early on to learn about its upgrade requirements, NI was able to prioritize key deliverables and gain valuable feedback from CERN to increase the quality of support for 64-bit Linux.

“The EN-ICE Group appreciates the engagement of NI to develop 64-bit software for CER N in a collaborative way,” said Adriaan Rijllart, section leader of the EN-ICE Group. “This very successful initiative is paving the way for exemplary partnerships between fundamental research organizations and industry.”

Communicator as external integrated network interface for a small PLC

PLC Communicator.jpgSmall PLCs, that do not have an integrated network interface, can easily be connected to fieldbus and industrial Ethernet networks via their RS-232 interface and the Anybus Communicator.

Flexible communication offerd by AnyBus is a key successes factor for almost any PLC. While most medium and large PLCs offer powerful integrated network interfaces, small and micro PLCs often only support serial communication via RS-232/485 interfaces with Modbus or other proprietary protocols. In these cases, the Anybus Communicator can be used as an external interface to integrate the PLC into almost any fieldbus or industrial Ethernet interface.

Anybus Communicator -Serial to Network Gateways:

The Communicator is connected to the RS-232/485 interface of the PLC and translates the serial data stream of the serial interface into a fieldbus or industrial Ethernet protocol. The Communicator completely handles the protocol conversation and represents the PLC as a slave/adapter on the network. With this solution, the PLC is integrated as one node with slave/adapter function into the network, however the PLC will not be permitted to control the network as a master / scanner.
