ABB introduces new solution to optimize production planning in cement plants

ABB Knowledge Manager Production Scheduler .jpgABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has launched Knowledge Manager Production Scheduler, a new software solution to manage and optimize production scheduling in cement plants. It provides the customers with optimal planning functionalities based on real-time information, considering production goals, business constraints as well as volatile energy tariffs to increase the overall process efficiency.

Frequently varying production constraints in a cement plant – like lower performance of equipment, fast increasing material stock or failure in one of the production lines – demand immediate adjustments in the production schedule. Thus, production scheduling is one of the most important activities for plant or production managers in order to achieve maximal operational efficiency.

ABB bundled its outstanding cement process knowledge to develop its Knowledge Manager Production Scheduler. This application allows the user to create, evaluate and compare multiple scenarios before deciding which one to use. These scenarios are readily available when a production situation changes so that plant managers can quickly activate them. This enables a very agile response, for example when it comes to an unplanned repair activity.

So, Production Scheduler optimizes the decision-making process leading to a more efficient operation and higher productivity. Making the right changes can bring vast benefits: cost savings for energy consumption, optimized stock management or enhanced equipment performance.

Knowledge Manager Production Scheduler main features are:

  • Forecast of inventory and energy consumption
  • Setting of goals and configuration of constraints
  • Scenario management

The solution has been successfully tested for over a year at selected pilot plants at Holcim, one of the world’s leading cement and building materials company, leading to the decision of rolling out the Production Scheduler globally. Over 20 installations have been completed during 2014, with more planned for the coming months.

The Production Scheduler is a new add-on to Knowledge Manager, one of ABB’s Collaborative Production Management solutions (CPM) for cement industries. Knowledge Manager collects, stores, consolidates and presents relevant information while making it easily accessible to all relevant stakeholders. With ABB’s CPM solutions all operation, control, optimization and business systems are integrated into one.

Rotork CQ Compact actuators – power and performance where space is limited

The launch of the Rotork CQ Compact introduces a range of fully concentric, balanced design pneumatic and hydraulic valve actuators that deliver a reliable and efficient self-contained solution for applications demanding functional integrity and safety where space is limited.

In addition to providing reduced dimensions when compared with conventional scotch-yoke actuators, the CQ’s symmetric design also presents a perfect weight balance on the valve, enabling increased efficiency for assembly and disassembly. The totally enclosed, rugged CQ weatherproof housing contains a helical mechanism which transforms linear piston motion into 90º (+/-5º) rotation for the operation of quarter-turn valves. As an option, rotation can be increased to 180º. Complete customisation of the torque profile is available to suit individual valve requirements.

The CQ range features a choice of cylinder sizes and different actuator builds for many diverse applications. In all cases the CQ design incorporates the removable valve adaptation within the overall dimensions for maximum compactness and actuators can be easily and safely disassembled to access internal parts for field maintenance. Internal coatings provide enhanced corrosion protection for long term reliability. External epoxy finishes and a wide choice of seal materials can be specified to meet industry and customer requirements.

CQ Compact actuators are available for single or double-acting operation with output torques up to 600,000 Nm. Pneumatic operation is available using instrument air, nitrogen or clean natural gas at 12 barg pressure, whilst 210 barg is recommended for hydraulic operation. Environmental and hazardous area certifications include IP66M/IP68M, PED, ATEX, IECEx and GOST. The actuators are also suitable for SIL3 safety related duty.

The standard operating temperature range is -30ºC to +100ºC providing suitability for applications in harsh and challenging environments, with an optional low temperature limit of -60ºC.

Yokogawa wins Control Systems Order for Coal-fired Thermal Power Plant in Vietnam

yokogawaYokogawa Electric Corporation announces that its subsidiary, Yokogawa Engineering Asia, has received an order from Toshiba Plant Systems & Services Corporation to deliver control systems for the Thai Binh coal-fired thermal power plant in Vietnam. Toshiba Plant Systems & Services will be responsible for installing the electrical and other facilities at this power plant.

The Thai Binh coal-fired power plant is being built in the Thai Thuy district of Thai Binh province in northern Vietnam by Vietnam Electricity (EVN), a national power company. With two 300-MW units, the plant will have a total output of 600 MW. The first unit is scheduled to start operation in October 2017.

For the control of the boilers in each unit and the integrated control and monitoring of the boilers, turbines, and auxiliary facilities throughout the plant, Yokogawa will deliver the CENTUM® VP integrated production control system and the Exaquantum™ plant information management system. Yokogawa Engineering Asia will be responsible for the engineering and delivery of these systems, and will provide support with installation, commissioning, and operator training. The delivery of all systems for unit 1 will be completed by September 2016.

Yokogawa has a long track record in delivering control systems to the power industry in Vietnam, and the company's systems are currently in use at facilities such as the Pha Lai 2, Vung Ang 1, Nghi Son 1, and Mong Duong 2 coal-fired thermal power plants. Yokogawa was able to win this order thanks to its strong project implementation capabilities and the high reliability and long-term stability of its products.

Throughout Southeast Asia, demand for energy is rapidly growing in line with economic growth. The Southeast Asia Energy Outlook-World Energy Outlook Special Report published by the International Energy Agency (IEA) in September 2013 predicts that Southeast Asia will need to invest 1.7 trillion dollars in energy infrastructure by 2035 and that the electric power industry will account for approximately 60% of this total. Currently, over 30 coal-fired power plants are either under construction or in the planning stage in Vietnam, making this country one of the region's most active investors in electric power.

Multi-Protocol Wireless Communication Based On The Isa100.11a Standard

Yokogawa Wireless protocol.pngOne of the international wireless standards for industrial use, ISA10 0.11a, was first established in 2009. Since then, wireless has been introduced into many industrial areas, and the recognition of industrial wireless technology has continued to grow as application examples increase. Nowadays, the use of wireless is spreading  further, and various types of sensors are beginning to be required. Even for existing systems using wired communications, wireless technology is considered as a communication means to collect information from already installed field devices, for example, diagnostic information concerning the devices.

In order to meet these requirements, various types of wireless field devices will need to be provided, and the means to unwire already installed wired field devices required. As a solution to satisfy both requirements, Yokogawa has developed the FN310 field wireless multi-protocol module, an adapter which can unwire existing wired field devices. The FN310 is capable of wireless communications using existing protocols such as Modbus and HART. Therefore, users do not need to waste their existing assets even if the field communication is changed to wireless. To achieve this feature, the FN310 applies the ISA100.11a standard, which enables wireless communications using various field digital communication protocols. The FN310 is used in combination with the FN110 under the concept of “Wireless Anywhere”. The FN110 is explained in “Field Wireless Communication Module toPromote Field Wireless” in this issue. This paper describes the F N310.
