PAC’s MicroDist Now Includes Density Analysis for Cetane Index

PAC, a leading global provider of advanced analytical instruments for laboratories and online process applications, recently released its latest version of the MicroDist, the most advanced online distillation analyzer on the market. Its unique technology provides complete and accurate distillation and density analysis in a single instrument. With the new density analysis, the applications for the MicroDist are expanded, including calculating the Cetane Index for diesel fuel process streams and intermediate blends according to ASTM D4737 and D976.

With complete distillation results in less than 10 minutes that correlate to ASTM D86, the MicroDist enables refineries to make quick and accurate decisions to continuously control the process and increase profitability. With this instrument, refineries are able to maximize production with cut point optimization of the crude oil; increasing T90% by 1°C may result in .5% to 1% additional diesel production, which can, depending on production levels, increase profits up to $1 Million.

"Refining business complexity keeps increasing, making timely decisions even more important to drive improved profitability for our customers,” said Daniel Benitez, PAC Vice-President of Process Analytics. “Recognizing this challenge, the expanded analytical capability of the MicroDist supports process plant optimization and reduces product quality giveaway.”

Yokogawa wins major Contract for one of the UK's Largest Onshore Gas Storage Facilities

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that its subsidiary, Yokogawa United Kingdom Ltd., has been awarded a multi-million pound contract by SSE Hornsea Ltd for the upgrade of one of the UK's largest onshore underground gas storage facilities, located at Atwick, East Yorkshire.

Yokogawa United Kingdom will supply an integrated control and safety system, together with a metering solution. The order includes the supply and installation of Yokogawa's flagship CENTUM® VP integrated production control system to control the gas compressors. Also included in the project is the ProSafe®-RS integrated safety instrumented system, which will contribute to ensuring process safety at the facility.

The Atwick gas storage facility comprises nine man-made salt cavities that have been leached into a salt layer 1.8 kilometres underground, creating around 325 million cubic meters of gas storage space. Gas is imported to the site and injected into the cavities for storage. When needed, the gas is then withdrawn from the cavities, dried, and exported to the National Transmission System. According to the British Geological Survey: "When compared to above ground storage tank facilities, underground gas storage provides the significantly greater and cheaper storage volumes required and, when carefully constructed and monitored, added levels of safety."

This contract is part of an SSE project to extend the life of the site and allow its use for both peak shaving and longer term storage by improving control, compression, and metering. It is the project's aim to ensure the viability of the asset's control systems and the commercial availability of the facility for the future by replacing the obsolete control systems with modern, maintainable, and supportable control and safety systems.

"This is a significant order win for Yokogawa," says David Clough, Sales Director at Yokogawa United Kingdom. "It was the quality of our products and their technical superiority, together with the experience and dedication of our engineers that were recognized by the customer. We are committed to achieve the project's aim, enhancement of the operational life, while maintaining safety."

Herman van den Berg, President, Yokogawa Europe B.V: "In Europe and North America, gas is often stored in underground facilities, and many projects for the construction and upgrade of such facilities are in the planning stage, spurred by such developments as the surge in shale gas production. Yokogawa is targeting the natural gas industry, and we believe that this project will allow us to gain further expertise in gas storage control and safety applications that we intend to share with the entire Group."

Yokogawa wins Control System Order for Municipal Water Treatment Plant in Indonesia

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that its subsidiary, PT Yokogawa Indonesia, has received an order from PT Waskita Karya (Persero) Tbk*1 to supply the automation system for the Petanu water treatment plant that it is building at the Sanur beach resort area on Bali's southeastern coast for a municipal water utility (PDAM*2) that is overseen by the Indonesian government's Ministry of Public Works.

The Petanu water treatment plant will produce 300 liters per second (approximately 25,920 cubic meters per day) of clean water for Gianyar Regency, Denpasar City, and Badung Regency. It is scheduled to start operation in September 2013.

Indonesia is the world's fourth most populous country, and its infrastructure is being rapidly developed to meet the growing needs of its urban population and the tourism industry. The Petanu water treatment plant is a key to ensuring a stable supply of clean water for southeastern Bali.

The automation system that is to be installed at the Petanu water treatment plant includes the FAST/TOOLS SCADA*3 software package, the STARDOM™ network-based control system, analyzers, and a variety of field devices such as ADMAG series magnetic flowmeters. Yokogawa Indonesia will be responsible for the entire project, from engineering to delivery, installation, and commissioning.

Yokogawa was able to win this order because of its ability to provide a one stop solution comprised of field devices, control systems, and other products that will meet a wide range of operation and maintenance needs and thereby improve the efficiency of water production.

Water shortages are becoming a serious problem in many parts of the world, particularly in developing countries, because of rapid economic and population growth. According to a report titled “Future Vision and Policy Response toward Water Business Industry" that was released by the Japan Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in April 2010, the global water market is projected to grow from 36 trillion yen in 2007 to 87 trillion yen in 2025.

Encouraged by the success in winning this order, Yokogawa will seek to expand its share of the water-related control business in Southeast Asia and other emerging regions by providing water supply infrastructure solutions based on its extensive experience in water treatment applications and technical expertise in automation systems.
