The new MM992-2VD (Variable Distance) media module from Siemens enables the use of two-wire cabling, such as Profibus cables, for Ethernet communication, without the need for additional hardware such as modems. The MM992-2VD media module permits the transfer of data across distances of up to 1,000 meters. The bandwidth depends on the length and quality of the cable, but as a general rule, bandwidths of 100 Mbit/s can be implemented at a distance of 500 meters, and cables of 1,000 meters in length have bandwidths of 10 Mbit/s. Cables are connected to the media module via an RJ45 connector. The MM992-2VD media module can be used with all modular switches in the Scalance X-300 range, as well as with the Scalance S627-2M security module.
With the MM992-2VD media module, existing cable infrastructure within machinery and plants is able to be converted to an Ethernet network quickly and economically. This solution, developed by Siemens, represents an uncomplicated method of migrating to Profinet, particularly in view of the wide use of Profibus cabling.
In addition, the media module can be used within Ethernet networks to extend the maximum Ethernet cable length for bandwidths of 100 Mbit/s as defined in the standard - the MM992-2VD enables the simple integration of remote network nodes into plant networks at distances of over 100 and up to a maximum of 300 meters using standard copper cables instead of the glass fiber optic cables previously necessary for such Ethernet connections.

Technip has been awarded a contract by Shell UK Limited to provide front-end engineering design (FEED) for the onshore elements of the Peterhead Gas Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) demonstration project in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The project is designed to capture, compress and transport by pipeline one million tonnes a year of carbon dioxide to an offshore gas reservoir for long-term storage beneath the North Sea.
Reuters: Byco Oil Petroleum Ltd. (BOPL), a subsidiary of Byco Petroleum Pakistan Ltd., has commissioned its long-awaited 120,000-b/d refinery in Baluchistan Province, Pakistan. The refinery, now Pakistan’s largest, began operations in mid-February and currently is operating at its initial capacity of 50,000 b/d, according to a recent company release. With start-up of the first phase now completed, the company is preparing for the next stage of the commissioning, which will increase the plant’s processing capacity to 90,000 b/d and onwards to 120,000 b/d, said Derek Lawler, BOPL chief executive.
Siemens has broadened its Simatic Top Connect portfolio with a range of new modules and system components for fast and safe wiring of Simatic S7-1500 and Simatic ET 200MP. In addition to connection modules for eight channels (inputs or outputs), Siemens also offers, for the first time, compact versions for 32 channels that are available for connecting sensors and actuators via one or three wires. Thereby only one cable needs to be connected between the connection module and the S7-1500 controller instead of four for the individual 8-channel modules. In addition, the new 32-channel connection module requires less space on the mounting rail than four modules with eight inputs and outputs each. The new connection modules feature the compact design of the Simatic S7-1500, allowing space-saving installation in the control cabinet. With system cabling, users can save up to 80 percent time compared to conventional single wiring using terminal blocks.
