Ethernet via two-wire cabling for new and existing systems

The new MM992-2VD (Variable Distance) media module from Siemens enables the use of two-wire cabling, such as Profibus cables, for Ethernet communication, without the need for additional hardware such as modems. The MM992-2VD media module permits the transfer of data across distances of up to 1,000 meters. The bandwidth depends on the length and quality of the cable, but as a general rule, bandwidths of 100 Mbit/s can be implemented at a distance of 500 meters, and cables of 1,000 meters in length have bandwidths of 10 Mbit/s. Cables are connected to the media module via an RJ45 connector. The MM992-2VD media module can be used with all modular switches in the Scalance X-300 range, as well as with the Scalance S627-2M security module.

With the MM992-2VD media module, existing cable infrastructure within machinery and plants is able to be converted to an Ethernet network quickly and economically. This solution, developed by Siemens, represents an uncomplicated method of migrating to Profinet, particularly in view of the wide use of Profibus cabling.

In addition, the media module can be used within Ethernet networks to extend the maximum Ethernet cable length for bandwidths of 100 Mbit/s as defined in the standard - the MM992-2VD enables the simple integration of remote network nodes into plant networks at distances of over 100 and up to a maximum of 300 meters using standard copper cables instead of the glass fiber optic cables previously necessary for such Ethernet connections.

Technip awarded contract to provide onshore FEED for commercial gas carbon storage project

Technip has been awarded a contract by Shell UK Limited to provide front-end engineering design (FEED) for the onshore elements of the Peterhead Gas Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) demonstration project in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. The project is designed to capture, compress and transport by pipeline one million tonnes a year of carbon dioxide to an offshore gas reservoir for long-term storage beneath the North Sea.

The FEED scope includes a grassroots carbon capture and compression plant and modifications to an existing combined cycle gas turbine power plant. Technip’s operating centre in Milton Keynes, UK, which executed a pre-FEED study for the Peterhead CCS project about 18 months ago, will execute the FEED for this next phase. This office serves as a centre of excellence for the development of end-to-end solutions for carbon capture and sequestration projects.

Technip has a strong record of deploying clean technologies and particularly first-of-a-kind technologies. Examples include the world’s first floating offshore wind unit and the world’s largest biofuels unit.

Stan Knez, Technip’s Senior Vice President, Process Technology, commented: “Technip is committed to the development of innovative, sustainable solutions for our customers and we look forward to expanding our footprint into the carbon capture and sequestration value chain.”

Technip has widened its range of services and has reinforced its leadership in the downstream business since the acquisition of Stone & Webster process technologies in 2012.

Byco commissions Pakistan’s largest refinery

Reuters: Byco Oil Petroleum Ltd. (BOPL), a subsidiary of Byco Petroleum Pakistan Ltd., has commissioned its long-awaited 120,000-b/d refinery in Baluchistan Province, Pakistan.  The refinery, now Pakistan’s largest, began operations in mid-February and currently is operating at its initial capacity of 50,000 b/d, according to a recent company release.  With start-up of the first phase now completed, the company is preparing for the next stage of the commissioning, which will increase the plant’s processing capacity to 90,000 b/d and onwards to 120,000 b/d, said Derek Lawler, BOPL chief executive.

The refinery already has started to produce on-specification products, including gasoline, diesel, fuel oil, LPG, and naphtha.  Within the next 12 months, the refinery will be able to produce Euro 2-standard gasoline as well as high-speed diesels meeting international standards, Lawler added.  No timetable was disclosed for when the refinery would reach its full 120,000-b/d processing capacity.

Simple wiring in the control cabinet - Siemens broadens its Simatic Top Connect portfolio

Siemens has broadened its Simatic Top Connect portfolio with a range of new modules and system components for fast and safe wiring of Simatic S7-1500 and Simatic ET 200MP. In addition to connection modules for eight channels (inputs or outputs), Siemens also offers, for the first time, compact versions for 32 channels that are available for connecting sensors and actuators via one or three wires. Thereby only one cable needs to be connected between the connection module and the S7-1500 controller instead of four for the individual 8-channel modules. In addition, the new 32-channel connection module requires less space on the mounting rail than four modules with eight inputs and outputs each. The new connection modules feature the compact design of the Simatic S7-1500, allowing space-saving installation in the control cabinet. With system cabling, users can save up to 80 percent time compared to conventional single wiring using terminal blocks.

The connection modules with eight channels are available in different versions, with disconnect terminals for manually cutting off specific plant sections, for example, or with relays and optocouplers for adapting the potential with which signals with AC voltages of 110 or 230 volts can also be connected to the controller. The 8-channel connection modules are fully compatible with the field-proven front connector modules for Simatic S7-300 and ET 200 M.

The appropriate system cabling can be selected in accordance with the respective input or output modules simply and quickly in the TIA Selection Tool.

Kepware Technologies Wins Bronze in 2014 Stevie Awards for Outstanding Customer Service

Kepware Technologies, a software development company focused on communications for automation, was presented on Friday, February 21st with a Bronze Stevie Award for Customer Service Department of the Year in the computer software category for companies with up to 100 employees.

The Stevie Awards for Sales & Customer Service recognize the achievements of call centers, customer service, and sales professionals worldwide. Several hundred executives judged the more than 1,000 entries received this year in more than 100 categories.

"Exceeding our customers' expectations is critical to growing our business and maintaining Kepware's reputation for delivering the highest quality products and services in our industry," said Brett Austin, President, Kepware Technologies. "We're honored to have received the 2014 Bronze Award for Customer Service Department of the Year. The award recognizes the hard work and dedication of our Technical Support team, and challenges us to keep improving."

Kepware was recognized by the judges for its unique approach to customer service. While other organizations measure success by key performance indicators like time to resolution, Kepware concentrates on spending quality time with customers and building mutually beneficial relationships. Under the direction of Matthew Roy, Kepware's Director of Technical Support, the department doubled in size in 2014 and added a coordinator to triage cases efficiently. The additional resources have allowed Kepware to spend quality time with its growing customer base while still responding quickly to open cases.

"We couldn't be happier with this year's Stevie Award winners," said Michael Gallagher, President and Founder of the Stevie Awards. "Each year it becomes increasingly difficult for our judges to weed out the best of the best. We continue to be impressed, and believe this year's recipients are truly deserving."

Trophies were presented to honorees at a banquet on Friday, February 21st at the Bellagio hotel in Las Vegas. A full list of winners can be found on the Stevie Awards website.
