Case Study: Turkey’s refinery chooses Rotork valve automation for Retrofit upgrade

Rotork valve actuation and two-wire digital control technology has been chosen for a major upgrade and automation programme at the Tupras Izmit refinery in Turkey.

Tupras is Turkey’s largest industrial company and leading refiner, operating four refineries of which Izmit is the largest. First opened in 1961, production at Izmit of commodities including LPG, naphtha, petrol, jet fuel, kerosene and diesel is now running at over 11 million tons a year.

More than 900 explosionproof Rotork IQ intelligent electric valve actuators will be installed in a four stage project to motorise manually operated valves on the refinery’s tank farms. Nearly 800 of the actuators will be retrofitted on existing valves whilst the balance will consist of new actuated valve packages. Many of the actuators will be factory fitted with intumescent fireproof coatings.

Making Accurate Temperature Measurements with Thermocouples, Thermistors and RTD Sensors

As one of the most common physical phenomena engineers and scientists monitor, temperature measurements are vitally important to ensure proper functioning of a vast array of applications. While modern systems have simplified this process for users, understanding the theories, operation, and inherent pitfalls of temperature measurements can help improve the accuracy and reliability of your data.

This white paper explains the pros and cons of the most widely-used temperature transducers: thermocouples, resistance temperature detectors (RTDs), and thermistors. Click to download the White Paper by MC Measurement Computing

ISA unveils TechTour 2013

The International Society of Automation (ISA) announces the introduction of a new training program that makes available several of ISA’s most popular and comprehensive technical training courses to a majority of cities in the US where expert-led ISA instruction has not previously been offered.

“At ISA, we’re very excited about this new training concept as it brings extensive, detailed and hands-on ISA instruction—the very same classroom-quality training that’s provided at our North Carolina headquarters and regional training centers—to new parts of the country,” says Dalton Wilson, ISA’s Manager of Education Services. “We believe strongly in the value of ISA training courses, for both individuals and employers, in raising standards of efficiency, reliability, safety and security. We want to make them as accessible as possible.”

The program, ISA TechTour, is designed to make it easier, more convenient and more cost-effective for automation and control technicians and engineers living in these cities and surrounding areas to obtain the in-depth technical training they need to improve their career skills.

Through participation in courses offered through ISA TechTour, students will experience highly intensive training taught by ISA’s preeminent subject matter experts, and hands-on instruction using ISA’s specialized equipment laboratories.

ISA TechTour 2013 will be offering four select ISA courses in 10 communities throughout the southwestern and western US:

  • Beaumont, Texas - 25-29 March 2013
  • Pasadena, Texas -29 April - 3 May 2013
  • Freeport, Texas - 20-24 May 2013
  • Corpus Christi, Texas - 24-28 June 2013
  • Oklahoma City, Oklahoma - 29 July - 2 August 2013
  • Amarillo, Texas - 26-30 August 2013
  • Denver, Colorado - 23-27 September 2013
  • Farmington, New Mexico - 28 October - 1 November 2013
  • Las Vegas, Nevada - 18-22 November 2013

Hannover Messe 2013

Hannover Messe is the world’s largest trade fair and a central marketplace for automation technologies. The success of HANNOVER MESSE 2012 confirms once again that the world’s most important technology show is a powerful driver of investment in new technology and automation. Global megatrends such as dwindling resources, sustainability, mobility and urbanization are forcing industry to embrace change and invest for the future.

The upcoming HANNOVER MESSE 2013 will be staged under the banner of "Integrated Industry." The lead theme signals the fair's key focus on the growing integration of all areas of industry. "Machines, industrial equipment, work pieces and system components will soon be capable of exchanging data in real-time."

This Exhibition will be held at Hannover, Germany from 8th to 12th April 2013.

The one of the exhibition Process Automation with the core themes, such as pressure, fluid-level and temperature measurement, mechanical power transmission, drives, actuators and automatic control technology is supported by a stimulating program of speaking events and discussion forums.

The Process Automation section of the Industrial Automation show in halls 8, 9, 11 and 14/15 covers all the core themes, such as pressure, fluid-level and temperature measurement, mechanical power transmission, drives, actuators and automatic control technology. The displays and exhibits are supported by a stimulating program of speaking events and discussion forums. For instance, energy-efficient products and solutions will be presented and discussed in the Efficiency Arena in Hall 14, and industrial IT - a technology of fundamental importance to industry and an integral part of this year’s lead theme of "Integrated Industry" - will take center stage in Hall 8.

ABB to supply control system for power plant in Italy

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, has won an order from Enel, Italy’s largest power company and one of Europe’s leading utilities, to supply its Symphony® Plus automation and control system to serve one of the major units at the Grazia Deledda Sulcis power plant on the island of Sardinia.

Grazia Deledda Sulcis is a 590 megawatt (MW) coal-fired power plant near the town of Portoscuso on the southwestern coast of Sardinia. The plant comprises two units, each with a generating capacity of over 240 MW. The existing control systems will be replaced with a total plant automation solution to enhance the unit’s efficiency and improve its environmental performance. The company is taking proactive measures to improve efficiency and reduce the environmental impact of its coal-fired power plants.

The new Symphony Plus solution includes the recently introduced high-performance controller, burner management and flue gas desulfurization systems, instrumentation, a new control room and operator stations equipped with an intuitive and easy-to-use human machine interface.

“The Symphony Plus plant automation system can make a significant contribution towards improving efficiency and lowering environmental impact by integrating multiple plant production and information systems into a single platform” said Massimo Danieli, head of ABB’s Power Generation business, a part of the company’s Power Systems division. ”It is scalable and enables integration of the plant’s electrical, business and maintenance systems as requirements evolve over time”.

Linde to build six major air separation units in China

The technology company The Linde Group will build six major air separation units for Shenhua Ningxia Coal Industry Group Co. Ltd. and Shenhua Logistics Group Co. Ltd. in Yinchuan in the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region in Northwest China. The companies recently signed a contract to this effect. Shenhua Ningxia is a member of Shenhua Group Co. Ltd., the largest coal chemical company in China.

'We are delighted to start cooperating with Shenhua Group and contribute our in-depth expertise in air separation technology,' said Prof. Dr Aldo Belloni, Member of the Executive Board of Linde AG. 'The project further strengthens our position as a leading gases and engineering company in China.'

The air separation units will each supply around 100,000 normal cubic metres of gaseous oxygen per hour (Nm³/h) to Shenhua Ningxia's Coal-to-Liquid (CTL) complex at Ningdong Energy Chemical Base. The oxygen will be used for the production of 4 million tons of CTL - mainly liquid fuels derived from coal - per year, making this one of the largest Coal-to-Liquid projects worldwide. Linde will be responsible for the engineering, supply of machinery and equipment, supervision services at the job site, turnkey supply of the cold boxes and training the buyer's personnel. The air separation units are scheduled to go on stream in 2015.

The Linde Group is a world-leading gases and engineering company with around 62,000 employees in more than 100 countries worldwide.
