Rotork selected for valve automation at the Olivenza Thermosolar power plant

Rotork intelligent electric valve actuation with digital 2-wire monitoring and control has been specified for valve automation at the Olivenza Thermosolar power plant in Spain, a CSP (Concentrated Solar Power) technology facility generating eco-friendly electricity for up to 50,000 households.

More than 100 IQ actuators and two Pakscan P3 hot-standby master stations have been supplied, fully installed, cabled and commissioning by Rotork Iberia. Rotork’s intelligent IQ actuator technology is recognised for isolating and regulating valve duties in the field of power generation. The use of solid-state electronics as an alternative to switch mechanisms and counter limiting devices, combined with programmable micro-processor based control and instrumentation functionality, offers many proven benefits.

These include ‘non-intrusive’ configuration and data transfer by means of a hand held instrument via a secure, bi-directional link. This system is used to perform all the switch setting and commissioning functions that were traditionally only achieved by removing electrical covers. Using the multi-lingual menu on the actuator display screen, it is quick and easy to commission the valve, with or without mains power connected.

The same instrument is used to download this data and upload it to other IQ actuators with similar commissioning parameters, simplifying and speeding up the operation, or to download actuator operating information from the actuator’s data logger.  The inclusion of a data logger enables an event-by-event history of valve activity to be generated, including torque profiles produced during each opening and closing. Using Rotork’s IQ-Insight2 software, these can be compared with the valve torque signature profile logged during the commissioning process to identify the trend of valve operating wear or isolate tight spots and other problems. Analysis of this data improves asset management through fault diagnostics and preventative maintenance.

Digital two-wire control is provided by Rotork’s proprietary Pakscan P3 system, the third generation of a market-leading product, capable of monitoring and controlling up to 240 field units without repeaters on a single highway with a length of up to 20 kilometres. Designed specifically for the valve actuation environment, Pakscan combines high reliability and efficiency with low maintenance costs. In providing the vital link between the actuators in the field and the centralised supervisory control room, Pakscan incorporates secure field communications with inbuilt network redundancy to maintain control even in the event of equipment or cable failure.

The Olivenza Thermosolar power plant is the second plant to be operated by the Spanish company Ibereolica.

Yokogawa wins Automation & Safety systems for Bi-directional LNG Plant by Cheniere Energy Partners

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announced today that it has been selected to supply the integrated automation and safety system for the new liquefaction trains at Cheniere's LNG facility in Sabine Pass, LA, which is being developed by its subsidiary Sabine Pass Liquefaction, LLC (SPL).

SPL is the first company with Department of Energy approval to export liquefied natural gas (LNG) to non-Free Trade Agreement countries. The development of liquefaction services at the Sabine Pass LNG receiving terminal in Cameron Parish, LA will transform the terminal into a bi-directional facility capable of liquefying and exporting natural gas and importing and re-gasifying foreign-sourced LNG.

“We are proud to be part of this groundbreaking liquefaction project in the U.S.,” says Chet Mroz, President and CEO of Yokogawa Corporation of America. “Yokogawa has a 25 percent worldwide market share for LNG plants as well as a long-standing relationship with Cheniere Energy, beginning with the purchase of Yokogawa's CENTUM® CS 3000 control system for the original gasification facility at Sabine Pass in 2006.”

SPL will also utilize the ProSafe®-RS integrated safety instrumented system (SIS) from Yokogawa for the site. ProSafe-RS delivers the world's first completely integrated SIS for DCS to simplify deployment, operation, and maintenance. Until now, two separate monitoring and operating environments were required for the DCS and SIS. ISA WWAC Symposium Partnership with WEF with Award recognizing collaboration

The 2013 ISA Water/Wastewater and Automatic Controls (WWAC) Symposium, to be held 6-8 August 2013 at the Crowne Plaza Orlando-Universal Hotel in Orlando, Florida, USA, highlights ISA’s ongoing partnership with the Water Environment Federation (WEF). An award recognizing the collaboration between the two organizations was recently bestowed on Thomas DeLaura, vice president of Eramosa International, Inc.

DeLaura was named ISA’s Water and Wastewater Industry Division Member of the Year for his work to promote collaboration between WEF’s Automation and Information Technology Committee and the ISA Water and Wastewater Division. The award is given by the ISA Water and Wastewater Division to recognize a volunteer leader whose contributions have had a significant impact on the water and wastewater automation community.

The WWAC Symposium is experiencing a new-found growth in popularity thanks to newly formed alliances with the WEF, the Florida Section of the American Water Works Association (FSAWWA) and the National Rural Water Association (NRWA). By forming strong partnerships with other associations, the symposium has been able to reach a broader cross-section of water and wastewater professionals across the industry. For members of these associations, the symposium provides targeted professional development and training opportunities otherwise inaccessible.

“This collaboration aligns with WEF’s Strategic Direction, connecting water professionals to leverage knowledge and promote innovation,” said DeLaura. “I am very much looking forward to continuing WEF’s technical co-sponsorship of the 2013 WWAC Symposium. It has been a pleasure to be part of the team that brought ISA and WEF together for this symposium, as well as on several other initiatives. The power of such collaboration is uplifting.”

Total starts Moho Nord Development in the Republic of the Congo

Total, operator of the Moho-Bilondo license, today announces the final investment decision and EPC contract awards for the Moho Nord development, consisting of the Moho-Bilondo Phase 1bis and Moho Nord projects. First oil is expected in 2015, with output reaching 140,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boe/d) in 2017. The joint development represents an investment of US$10 billion.

Located approximately 75 kilometers from Pointe-Noire and 25 kilometers west of N’Kossa in water depths ranging from 450 to 1,200 meters, the Moho Nord project will target additional reserves in the southern part of the license (Phase 1bis) and new reserves in the northern part (Moho Nord). The additional reserves are estimated at approximately 485 million barrels of oil equivalent.

“The development of Moho Nord marks another milestone in Total’s long established presence in the Republic of the Congo and leverages our demonstrated expertise in successfully managing major projects, especially in the deep offshore. The launch enhances visibility on Total’s production growth objective,” commented Yves-Louis Darricarrère, President of Total Upstream.

The project is the latest step in developing the license, following on from Moho Bilondo Phase 1E, brought on stream in 2008.  For Phase 1bis, a total of 11 subsea wells in the Miocene will be tied back to the existing FPU on Moho-Bilondo, whose processing capacity will be increased by 40,000 boe/d. For Moho Nord, 17 subsea wells targeting Miocene reservoirs will be drilled and tied back to a new floating production unit (FPU) and 17 more subsea wells targeting Albian reservoirs will be developed from a new build tension leg platform. Before being exported by pipeline to the onshore Djeno Terminal, the new production will be processed on the FPU, which will have a capacity of 100,000 boe/d.

The installations have been designed to limit environmental impact. Measures include eliminating flaring under normal operating conditions and reinjecting all produced water. As part of the project, Total will promote local content by encouraging development of the regional industrial base.

Total E&P Congo, the Group’s wholly owned subsidiary, operates the Moho Bilondo license with a 53.5% interest, alongside state-owned Société Nationale des Pétroles du Congo (15%) and Chevron Overseas Congo (31.5%).
