ISA and MAVERICK Technologies to Co-host DCS Migration Webinar

MAVERICK Technologies, the largest independent systems integrator in North America, will join the International Society of Automation (ISA) in co-hosting a free webinar on DCS migration. The 90-minute webinar, “Straight Talk on DCS Migration,” to be held January 29 at 12 p.m. EST, will feature a panel of experts discussing the trends and challenges of DCS migration.

Discussion will focus on real results observed in the field. Specific topics include the principles of DCS migration, five pitfalls to avoid and industry trends. Additionally, the panel will present a case study on a recent legacy platform migration and will open the floor for questions about specific migration issues.

“Every day we talk to manufacturers who want to know more about DCS migration — including the risks involved, making the business case and how to get started,” said Paul J. Galeski, CEO and founder of MAVERICK. “So we partnered with the ISA to address those concerns in this webinar. We have no hidden sales agenda. We just want manufacturers to avoid the migration mistakes we’ve seen others make.”

The webinar panel comprises four engineers with 87 years of combined experience. John Boyd serves as MAVERICK’s technology leader for Rockwell Automation, leading the technical direction of the Rockwell platform. Chad Harper, MAVERICK’s director of technology, directs subject matter experts in providing content for training programs, reusing strategies and ensuring project quality. Nick Sands works as a process control engineer at DuPont and was lead editor of the new ANSI/ISA alarm management standard for the process industries. Matt Sigmon works as director of DCSNext®, MAVERICK’s solution for DCS migration.

Interested parties can register for “Straight Talk on DCS Migration” at ISA’s website isa.org/MAVwebinar

Smart Valve Monitoring delivers solution for increased partial stroke test functionality

The Rotork SVM (Smart Valve Monitoring) system has been selected to provide a networked solution for digital valve monitoring and partial stroke testing on a large scale oilfield installation in the Middle East. The system is designed to deliver predictive maintenance information from widely distributed areas for use by the operators to reduce shutdowns and improve overall plant efficiency.

This is made possible by the ability of the SVM to be integrated into an existing Ethernet and fibre optic infrastructure, enabling over one hundred monitored valve actuators on wellheads at numerous locations to be networked over distances of ten kilometres or more.

The SVM field control units on this project are attached to the ESD circuits for shut off valves installed in sets of two and four on more than fifty wellheads. Analysis is performed on the SVM server computer in the centralised control room. Communication between the wellhead sites and the computer is fully integrated within the operator’s existing network infrastructure. The SVM field units are incorporated into the Ethernet network that links other equipment and instrumentation at each wellhead site. A fibre optic link is then used to transmit the data to intermediate engineering and control stations at two manifold sites. From these sites, fibre optic links are again used to transmit data from all the wellheads to the centralised control room.

Partial stroke testing (PST) is a function used in a safety instrumented system (SIS) to enable the operator to identify possible failure modes on a shutdown or emergency shutdown (ESD) valve without the need to completely close the valve and hence disrupt the process. Partial stroke testing is an accepted hydrocarbon industry standard technique that is quantified in detail by regulatory bodies such as the IEC and ISA.

Technip wins FEED contract for proposed new ammonia plant in Louisiana

Technip has been awarded by The Mosaic Company (NYSE: MOS) the front-end engineering and design (FEED) contract, as well as preparation of the corresponding engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) proposal, for a new ammonia plant under consideration by the global crop nutrient company. Mosaic’s preference is to locate the proposed plant adjacent to the company’s existing Faustina fertilizer manufacturing operations in St. James Parish, Louisiana. It would have a capacity of 2,200 metric tons per day.

Mosaic is the world’s largest producer of finished phosphate products, with annual production capacity greater than the next two largest producers combined. The company’s plan is to backward integrate more fully into ammonia production by expanding its present capacity at Faustina. Ammonia is an essential ingredient in the manufacture of phosphate-based crop nutrients.

The proposed design of the plant would feature Haldor Topsøe’ proprietary ammonia process technology that Technip has successfully engineered and constructed in projects for more than 40 years. Technip will also perform the preliminary design work for the plant offsites, utilities, interconnections, and other supporting units for the facility.

Technip’s operating center in Houston, Texas will execute the FEED contract in collaboration with its engineering center in Rome, Italy. The development of the FEED and corresponding EPC proposal began in November 2012; both are targeted for completion by mid-2013.

Emerson offers instrument and valve recyling program

Emerson Process Management, through its Instrument & Valve Services operation, now offers a cash-back valve and instrument recycling program. The new recycling program gives plant sites with a control valve boneyard greater residual value for used or inoperable control equipment.

Using bins provided by Emerson, the recycling effort provides free pick up and shipment from the plant site to the Instruments & Valve Services recycle center, rapid evaluation of valve and instrument cores, and prompt payment with an itemized transaction report.

The recycling program provides greater return on original investment than traditional scrapping practices. It also helps prevent unnecessary waste of potentially useful materials.  While the program focuses on Fisher control valves and Rosemount instruments, to keep recycling efforts seamless and simple, Emerson is accepting non-Fisher valves as well.

The Instrument & Valve Services recycling program is accessible through the network of North American Emerson local business partners.
