Smart Grid meets PC-based Control

Case Study by Beckhoff: PC-based Control as universal control solution for energy and process data acquisition according to DIN EN ISO 50001.

Energy costs are obviously becoming an increasingly important factor for companies. Intelligent Energy management systems (EnMS) are required in order to increase energy efficiency and lower manufacturing costs. As such, as an example, the government of Germany intends to decide soon whether the reimbursement of tax on electricity and energy for the manufacturing industries is to be coupled to the introduction of an EnMS.

Webinar: Today’s VoIP networks and how to get started

Webinar by BlackBox about the benefits of VoIP for small and mid-size businesses

Voice over IP (VoIP) means using your Local Area Network (LAN) to make phone calls. VoIP technology delivers telephone calls and other voice communications over the Internet by converting analog voice signals to digital signals.Switching from an analog voice system to VoIP saves money, gives your organization more bandwidth, enables mobility, and offers you easy integration with on-line applications.

Along with some VoIP basics, we’ll take a look at the newest voice communications products on the market to help SMBs migrate to VoIP easily and affordably, including SIP phones and hybrid PBX VoIP gateways.

Five reasons to switch to a PBX VoIP gateway for deploying VoIP:

  • It’s much easier to install and configure than a traditional phone system.
  • The Web-based interface makes it much easier to manage.
  • You get significant cost savings using VoIP providers.
  • It’s a scalable system that makes roaming easy and cost-effective.
  • SIP phones are easier to use, whether person-to-person calling, conferencing, or using voice mail.

Rotork New range of compact leak ree high pressure regulators

Rotork Fairchild has launched a new range of compact high pressure pneumatic regulators for instrument and industrial control applications.

The new Rotork Fairchild range features patent pending improved valve seat sealing that eliminates the risk of media leakage often associated with conventional high pressure regulators. In addition, innovative diaphragm designs deliver superior accuracy and higher performance pressure regulation, especially with fluctuating supply pressures.

Constructed with 316 stainless steel bodies, the units are available as the HPD diaphragm design for pressures up to 413 Bar (6000 psi) and as the HPP piston design for even higher supply pressures.

The HPD design features high strength Inconel diaphragms as standard and will accurately regulate output pressures down to 1.66 Bar (25 psi). It is available with the standard polymer valve seat for media temperatures up to 80°C and supply pressures up to 241 Bar (3500 psi). Optional higher performance valve seats are fitted for temperatures up to 260°C and a maximum supply pressure of 413 Bar (6000 psi). The all-stainless steel HPP piston design models will also handle temperatures up to 260°C and increase the supply pressure capability to 689 Bar (10,000 psi).

Combustion Flue Gas Analysis Reduces NOx and Slag

Combustion flue gas analysis is used by power plants to optimize fuel/air ratio. By measuring the amount of excess oxygen and/or CO in the flue gases resulting from combustion, plants can operate at the best heat-rate efficiency and lowest NOX, and generate the least amount of greenhouse gas. The theoretical ideal, or the stoichiometric point, is where all fuel reacts with available oxygen in the combustion air, and no fuel or O2 is left over.

In actual practice a perfect mix of fuel and air may not be achievable, operation with 1-3% excess O2 and low parts per million of CO may result in the max achievable heat rate.

In addition to achieving the best combustion efficiency, many plants also have other important goals that effective combustion analysis helps to accomplish: minimizing NOX emissions and reducing slag.

Safety Speed Monitor Relays from AutomationDirect

AutomationDirect has added Dold safety speed relay modules to its line of safety products.

The BH5932 speed monitor relay module is designed to monitor two sensor inputs that are detecting rotating targets on a motor shaft. This monitor relay features two-channel operation and can be used for standstill and overspeed monitoring of three-phase motors. When used as a standstill monitor, a switch point is set just above the "safe" or normal operating speed. When motor speed rises above this setting, the relay opens to protect against motor damage. The BH5932 relay module has an adjustable impulse-per-minute (IPM) range of 10 to 20,000 IPM, LED status indicators, two PNP sensor inputs, and two normally-open and one normally-closed positive-guided contacts. Available for 24VDC, 120VAC, and 230VAC supply voltages, prices start at $279.

The LH5946 standstill monitor relay module provides safe standstill detection on single-phase and three-phase motors (up to 690V) by monitoring remanence voltage without external sensors. The monitor relay modules are designed with broken wire detection and provide three normally-open and one normally-closed positive-guided safety contacts. Available in adjustable 20 to 400mV and 0.2 to 4V voltage response ranges, standstill monitor relay modules are equipped with LED status indicators and adjustable time delay; semi conductor outputs monitor relay state. Available for 24VDC, 120VAC, and 230VAC supply voltages, prices start at $349.

Technip-NPCC consortium awarded important contract for the Upper Zakum field in Abu Dhabi

Technip, in a consortium with National Petroleum Construction Company (NPCC), was awarded by Zakum Development Company (ZADCO) a lump sum engineering, procurement, fabrication, installation, commissioning and start-up contract for the Upper Zakum 750K Project in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates. The field is located in the Gulf, 84 kilometers offshore Abu Dhabi. It is divided into four production artificial islands (Central, North, South, and West), with processing facilities at the Central Complex.

The scope of work covers:

  • 240 kilometers of subsea pipelines ranging from 6” to 42”,
  • 128 kilometers of subsea composite and fiber-optic cables,
  • Almost 30,000 tons of offshore structures (jackets, riser platforms, flare towers and bridges), including approximately 3,000 tons of islands modules and bridges.

The contract also includes the complete initial production facilities for temporary wells hook up to serve initial production distributed amongst the North, South and Central islands.

Technip's operating center in Abu Dhabi will execute the overall engineering and participate in procurement, on-island works, cable installation and initial production. The project is scheduled to be completed in the third quarter of 2015.
