Opto 22's SoftPAC : PC-Based Controller

Would you like to use your PC as a controller, rather than using a standalone or rack-mounted controller?

Does your application involve complex math, computational analysis, or advanced string handling?

Do you collect large amounts of data that you'd like to archive on your PC, on your network, or in the cloud?

Are you an OEM machine builder looking to reduce controller costs?

SoftPAC is a software controller that runs on your PC. A completely new product from Opto 22, SoftPAC is expected to be released in Fall 2012. You'll program SoftPAC using PAC Control (part of our PAC Project automation suite), just as you would any of our SNAP PAC hardware controllers.

The PAC Control strategy you develop will run on all of our controller types—PC-based (SoftPAC), standalone (S-series), and rack-mounted (R-series)—so you're not locked into one architecture. Compare all controllers.

PAC Project development software is field-tested worldwide and suited for any size control, monitoring, or data acquisition project.

  • Flowchart-based control programming is easy to learn and maintain.
  • Scripting simplifies loops, complex math, and string handling.
  • More than 450 commands in plain English speed development and maintenance, while offering just about any function you need.
  • Single tagname database saves development time and errors. You build the tag database when you program control logic, and it's ready to use in the HMI.
  • HMI includes trending, alarming, and operator security. You can use the built-in graphics library or import your own graphics.

ABB introduces Analytical Integration through new OPC-ADI based interface

ABB, the leading power and automation technology group, announced that it has introduced an extension to its System 800xA integrated control system based on the new OPC-ADI specification that will simplify communication with process analyzers and multivariate data modeling programs. Extension for System 800xA provides direct connection for analyzers and multivariate data analysis; one of the first interfaces based on new OPC specification to reduce complexity and improve manufacturing processes.

System 800xA now features Analyzer Device Integration Connect (ADIc), a device interface that allows System 800xA to integrate with analyzers and chemometric predictors.  ABB developed ADIc based on the OPC Analyzer Device Integration (OPC ADI) specification, an information model that defines a common method for data exchange for process and laboratory analyzers. It is an extension of the OPC United Architecture (OPC UA) specification.

“System 800xA is all about integration. ADIc is another step towards incorporating islands of intelligence, such as analyzers, into a single automation environment,” said Tobias Becker, head of ABB’s Control Technologies business. “ABB takes this further by adhering to the OPC ADI specification to demonstrate that System 800xA’s analytical device integration is fast yet secure, reliable and standards-based.”

“With this leading-edge process tool, customers can harness data from analyzer devices to improve overall process efficiency and product quality,” he continued.

Complex industries that are heavy users of analyzers, as well as industries that implement Process Analytical Technology (PAT) and Quality by Design (QbD) initiatives stand to reap benefits from this System 800xA extension.

Rotork installs 69 Actuators at Oil Tank facilities in China

At two brand new facilities, gigantic oil tanks with a combined capacity of four million cubic metres are being constructed, together with associated plant including heat exchangers and pumping stations. The sites are operated by pipework networks incorporating four hundred and sixty-nine explosionproof Rotork valve actuators with Pakscan digital control systems.

These apparently random statistics are all connected with a giant oil storage project in Central China created as part of a key national energy programme to provide crude oil reserves for national and commercial consumption.

Rotork China worked closely with several valvemakers to supply the IQ intelligent electric actuators for valve control at both sites. The majority are IQ multi-turn units, many equipped with IB series bevel gearboxes manufactured by Rotork Gears. The balance comprises IQT quarter-turn and IQML linear modulating actuators. Virtually all the actuators are controlled and monitored by six Rotork Pakscan P3 two-wire digital networks, which are specifically designed for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of valve actuators in the spacious environments associated with tank farm installations.

Yokogawa Wins Order for By-product Gas-fired Power Plant at Indonesian Steelworks

Yokogawa Electric Corporation announces that its subsidiary, Yokogawa Electric Korea Co., Ltd., has won an order from POSCO ICT*1 to supply control systems for a power plant at the Krakatau Posco*2 steelworks, which is being constructed in Cilegon, in Indonesia’s Banten province.

This power plant will have two 100 MW power generation units that will use the steelworks’ by-product gases as their main fuel source, and is scheduled to start operation in April 2014. This order is for CENTUM® VP integrated production control systems for the boilers, auxiliary boiler facilities, and auxiliary turbine facilities in each of the power generation units. The first unit’s system is scheduled to be delivered in January 2013.

Yokogawa has delivered numerous power plant control systems to customers in industries such as oil, chemicals, iron and steel, and pulp and paper. Over 50 Yokogawa control systems are operational in power plants that utilize by-product gases such as the blast furnace gas and coke gas generated at steelworks. POSCO currently uses Yokogawa control systems in nine 100 MW power generation units at its Gwangyang Steelworks. In addition, Yokogawa has installed 300 control systems at oil refineries and other facilities throughout Indonesia, and has established an extensive service network in this country. This is why Yokogawa was able to win this order.

Weir NA secures significant nuclear valve order

With the nuclear market booming, Weir Power and Industrial is in a strong position to deliver valves to the nuclear power industry. One such success story for Weir is the US facility in Ipswich, Massachusetts, which manufactures the Tricentric triple offset butterfly valve. The facility now possesses an ASME III N stamp, enabling them to produce nuclear grade products. Thanks to this certification and the hard work of the nuclear sales team, a significant nuclear valve order from Westinghouse was secured earlier this year. This order gives Weir Power and Industrial the responsibility for the installation of “N” stamped valves in the new units at Sanmen and Haiyang sites in China.

Sanmen and Haiyang sites are the first in China to deploy the Westinghouse AP1000 reactor.  The AP1000 is the first US pressurised water reactor design to utilize third generation passive technology, which uses natural reactor circulation and gravity fed cooling systems to perform many of its safety functions.  Westinghouse has six further orders for the AP1000 units in the US, and is in discussion with many other countries for additional units around the world to construct the AP1000 standardized design.

Weir Power and Industrials TRICENTRIC® triple offset butterfly valves will be used in the nuclear island of the plant for a containment isolation function. Many of the valves are required to operate before, during, and after an event which requires a performance qualification test to prove reliability.  The standard of testing for active valves is ASME QME-1, which is a new standard, and Weir will be the first US manufacturer to qualify butterfly valves.
