How will your Control System run?

Model-based control system design lets engineers create and run simulations of automation models before going live.

Automation engineers traditionally have implemented and tested control algorithms by running them on programmable automation controllers (PAC) connected to machinery. A drawback to this approach is that it can be expensive, difficult or dangerous to test the control strategy for the first time on the machine. A better approach is to first design and test the control system using simulation with a machine model. Simulation can uncover problems earlier in the development process and reduce the number of defects found later in the process, when they are more costly and difficult to fix. when the controller then is connected to the actual machine for testing and validation, engineers have more confidence that the system will behave as expected.

Thai SPP Uses CENTUM CS 3000 to Improve Efficiency of Biomass Power Plant

Case Study by Yokogawa: In 2005, A.T. Biopower Co., Ltd. built a biomass power plant in Pichit, Thailand. Using ground rice husks as its fuel, this plant generates 22.5 MW of electricity, of which 20 MW is sold to the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT). The plant was built with the support of the Thai government’s Ministry of Energy, which is promoting the construction of power plants by small power producers (SPP) that utilize hydro, biomass, or thermal cogeneration technology.

PetroChina Dushanzi Petrochemicals Polyethylene Plant System Migration

(Case Study by Yokogawa): PetroChina Company Limited is China’s largest oil and gas producer and distributor, and plays a dominant role in the country’s oil and gas industry. Dushanzi Petrochemicals, a primary subsidiary of PetroChina, operates China’s largest refinery and petrochemical complex. Operational since 2009, it can process 10 million tons of crude oil and produce 1.2 million tons of ethylene per year as well as a range of fuels and other refinery products. In 2007, Yokoshin Software Engineering (WuXi) Co., Ltd., a Yokogawa subsidiary, successfully installed the distributed control systems (DCS) for this megasize complex.
