Ethernet via two-wire cabling for new and existing systems

The new MM992-2VD (Variable Distance) media module from Siemens enables the use of two-wire cabling, such as Profibus cables, for Ethernet communication, without the need for additional hardware such as modems. The MM992-2VD media module permits the transfer of data across distances of up to 1,000 meters. The bandwidth depends on the length and quality of the cable, but as a general rule, bandwidths of 100 Mbit/s can be implemented at a distance of 500 meters, and cables of 1,000 meters in length have bandwidths of 10 Mbit/s. Cables are connected to the media module via an RJ45 connector. The MM992-2VD media module can be used with all modular switches in the Scalance X-300 range, as well as with the Scalance S627-2M security module.

With the MM992-2VD media module, existing cable infrastructure within machinery and plants is able to be converted to an Ethernet network quickly and economically. This solution, developed by Siemens, represents an uncomplicated method of migrating to Profinet, particularly in view of the wide use of Profibus cabling.

In addition, the media module can be used within Ethernet networks to extend the maximum Ethernet cable length for bandwidths of 100 Mbit/s as defined in the standard - the MM992-2VD enables the simple integration of remote network nodes into plant networks at distances of over 100 and up to a maximum of 300 meters using standard copper cables instead of the glass fiber optic cables previously necessary for such Ethernet connections.

HART Concentrator System HART-to-MODBUS RTU Converter 4-Wire

The HCS HART Concentrator System converts a HART digital signal to a serial (RS-485 or RS-232) MODBUS RTU communication protocol. This allows HART transmitters and valves to interface directly with MODBUS-based monitoring and control systems.

Operates in Point-to-Point and Digital Multidrop HART Networks:

In point-to-point HART mode, the HCS is set to monitor a single instrument. All process and diagnostic data carried on the HART data string is converted to MODBUS RTU.

Up to 16 HART Devices Per HCS. In a digital multidrop HART network, up to 16 HART instruments digitally communicate on the same wires. The HCS can be set to monitor any or all instruments and/ or valves within the network. Only one MODBUS address, and one communication link (such as twisted wire pair), is needed to send the process and diagnostic data from up to 16 HART devices to a MODBUS host.

Beckhoff Automation EK9300: The flexible gateway between different worlds of control

The EK9300 PROFINET IO Bus Coupler from Beckhoff can connect different control networks with each other in a simple and efficient manner. This enables a PROFINET controller to exchange data with one or more EtherCAT, PROFINET, PROFIBUS and EtherNet/IP systems. Thus, the EK9300 can be used as a flexible gateway for real-time communication between these networks, with all the advantages provided by the EtherCAT network as an extremely high performance lower-level I/O system.

The EK9300 Bus Coupler converts the telegrams from PROFINET IO to the EtherCAT “E-Bus” signal type. One station consists of an EK9300 and any number of EtherCAT Terminals. The coupler supports the PROFINET RT protocol and, therefore, fits seamlessly into PROFINET IO networks.

With its new firmware and the corresponding EtherCAT Terminals, the EK9300 Bus Coupler can be used as a flexible gateway between different network and controller types:

from PROFINET to EtherCAT (with EL6692-0000)

from PROFINET to PROFINET (with EL6631-0010)

from PROFINET to PROFIBUS (with EL6731-0010)

from PROFINET to EtherNet/IP (with EL6652-0010).

In this way, heterogeneous production systems can be networked by real-time communication without great effort and expense. For example, product-relevant management information can be collected in distributed units with different control systems or data can be exchanged in real-time between two PROFINET networks deliberately placed in different IP spaces.

EtherCAT: High-performance sub-bus with a wide I/O product range:

The EK9300 PROFINET IO coupler offers underlying connectivity to the high-performance and ultra-fast EtherCAT I/O system. Particularly for widely distributed systems, additional advantages are gained because the EtherCAT network topology offers high flexibility and the ability to bridge long transmission distances of up to 100 m. Another key benefit is that the EK9300 Bus Coupler – in addition to its actual gateway function – supports the extremely wide I/O range of EtherCAT Terminals including numerous IP 67 box modules for installation in harsh environments. This allows the optimum mapping of the physical process on the one hand and on the other it allows the connection of a PROFINET controller via several EtherCAT slave terminals to the corresponding number of identical or different control networks.
